Advanced Urology Nurse Practitioner

Our Advanced Urology Nurse Practitioner is Lesley Thurston. Lesley is a registered nurse with a specialist interest in Urology including Uro-Oncology.

She has experience and knowledge of developing nurse led services within the hospital and developed a prostate assessment clinic at the Medical Centre in 2007 for men with lower urinary tract symptoms which may include getting up at night to pass urine, daytime frequency and urgency, or straining and hesitancy to pass water.

The clinic has now developed to include a Specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist for female patients with urinary symptoms or problems including incontinence

She is a member of the British Association of Urology Nurses and National Association of Assistants in Surgical Practice and has been involved with the Department of Health “Modernisation Agency” looking at new ways of working.  She is a trained Nurse Cystoscopist with an interest in bladder cancer.   She is an autonomous practitioner and is able to provide this service by referral from your Doctor to her clinic.

Specialist Women's Health Physiotherapist

Our specialist Women's Health Physiotherapist is Jo Pitts.  Jo is a Chartered Physiotherapist registered with the Health Profressions Council.  She has a special interest in bladder and bowel continence, prolapse and pelvic floor dysfunction.  She works alongside Lesley Thurston in the Community Urology Clinic.

Jo is a member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health and Chartered Physiotherapists Promoting Continence.

She has many years experience in this speciality, and prior to working here at Newport Pagnell Medical Centre she led the Women's Health Physiotherapy service at Milton Keynes Hospital. 

Advanced Diabetes Nurse Practitioner

Our Advanced Diabetes Nurse Practitioner is Linda Sterry. Linda is a registered nurse with a specialist interest in Diabetes and Coronary heart disease.

She has experience and knowledge of running nurse-led services and has developed a new combined Diabetes and Coronary Heart Disease clinic here at our medical centre. She is only available on Mondays as she currently continues to provide specialist Diabetes services for Milton Keynes General Hospital.

She is a member of Diabetes UK and is the Milton Keynes lead for Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion. She is also a nurse prescriber and has a wealth of experience in primary care, having spent many years as a practice nurse.

Community Respiratory Specialist Nurse

Our Community Respiratory Specialist Nurse is Frances Baverstock. Frances is a registered nurse with a specialist interest in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma.

She has experience and knowledge of nurse led services and will be running respiratory clinics here at Newport.

Managing Partner

Caroline is responsible for the management of the Medical Centre; both the strategic development of the organisation and the day to day management of the practice.  Her job is to ensure that we are able to offer our patients the best care possible.  You can contact her about any query you may have about the Medical Centre and she will ensure that you receive a prompt response.  Please also address suggestions for improvement to her – they will receive serious consideration.

 Lead Nurse

Debbie is the manager of the integrated nursing team which is made up of nurses in the following teams:

• Advanced specialist nurses
• Community Matrons
• District Nurses
• Health Visitors
• Practice Nurses

Debbie sees her management role as about supporting and empowering the clinicians she manages in order to ensure excellence of care for patients.  Her role also involves responsibility of care of people with long term conditions ensuring patient pathways are structured and systematic, and that patients benefit from empowering consultations.

Karen Russell is our Community Matron at Newport Pagnell Medical Centre. She is an experienced senior nurse working with those who have serious long term conditions and who may also be isolated and vulnerable.

She works with the hospital, doctors and other nurses to co-ordinate ways of meeting the health and social care needs of her patients. The aim is to prevent hospital admissions by managing deterioration of symptoms and situations at an earlier stage than otherwise may be possible. Through this close partnership she gains the confidence of the patients and their carers so that the matron can be the first point of contact when necessary.

The District nursing team are based at Newport Pagnell Medical Centre and also care for Kingfisher Surgery patients. 

The team consists of experienced nurses who specialise in providing a wide range of care in the community.  They visit all patients requiring nursing care who are unable to access care at the surgeries. 

Their aim is to support patients to enable them to stay in their own homes.  They do this by assessing what care is needed and then co-ordinating and delivering that care.  They also provide a high level of support to the many residential homes and sheltered accommodation in the area.

The team consists of the following nurses:

District Nursing Service

• The District nurses visit patients who are strictly housebound and for medical reasons are unable to attend the Medical Centre for a Practice Nurse appointment. 
• District Nurses are not an emergency service, in case of an emergency please contact your GP or dial 999.
• All patients referred for continence promotion will be given a full assessment. Continence is the goal, with continence products used only as a last resort or short-term option.
• Any member of the team may visit patients – this may include staff members from around the area and bank staff.
• All packages of care will include health promotion, supporting the service’s overall aim of encouraging greater independence and well being.

What District Nurses Do

• Referral to other agencies if appropriate
• Complex Assessment of health needs
• Wound assessment
• Acute and Chronic Disease Management
• Health Promotion
• Palliative and end of life care
• Promotion of self care whenever possible to enable independence
• Administration of treatment using specialised nursing equipment and medication
• Provide community leg club services

What District Nurses Don't Do

Our Health Visitors are registered nurses with additional training in child, family health and midwifery. As part of the wider Health Care Team they work closely with GP’s and other services, promoting the health and well-being to meet the changing needs of the local community.

The health visiting team working at the Medical Centre, also cover the Kingfisher Surgery, Newport Pagnell.

Child Health Clinics are held twice a week at Newport Pagnell Medical Centre.  They are run by the health visiting team and are open for any families with children under 5.  Parents can seek advice on various issues including feeding, colic, constipation, rashes, sleep, behaviour difficulties, toilet training and teething.

Information is also given on groups and activities available for families in Newport Pagnell.

Health visitors also offer support to any parents who may be finding themselves overwhelmed or are having difficulties adjusting to parenthood.  They are concerned with the health of the entire family not just the child.

Parents are also able to request a home visit from a health visitor if there are concerns they would like to discuss in privacy or in more detail.

Child health clinics are held Thursday and Fridays 09:30 - 11:15 except the first Friday in the month.

Physiotherapists

We have a team of 5 physiotherapists who provide an in house service at the Medical Centre 5 days a week between the hours of:

Additionally we provide a domiciliary service where the therapist will make a home visit to a patient who is physically unable to visit the Medical Centre.  The usual route of referral is via a GP who will arrange for physiotherapy if they feel it would be beneficial to a condition. 

Our physiotherapists are very experienced and provide a variety of treatments such as mobilisation, manipulation, acupuncture, electrotherapy and advice on exercise and self help.   The team comprises of:

The team provide treatment for all types of musculo-skeletal conditions, for example:

• Low back pain/sciatica
• Cervicalgia (neck pain) with and without pain or pins and needles referred into the arms.
• Joint pain (shoulder, hip, knee and ankle)
• Osteoarthritic and Rheumatoid arthritic pain
• Sports injuries
• Biomechanical/postural conditions
• Whiplash
• Post surgery rehabilitation

They can also provide walking aids and supports when needed such as sticks, crutches and wrist/thumb splints.

We also provide a telephone call-back service. If you feel you need a chat or advice from any of the Physiotherapists please call the Medical Centre and request a call back from one of the team.  Your name will be placed on a list and one of the team will contact you at the first available opportunity to discuss your problem and offer appropriate advice.

We also have a specialist Women's Health Physiotherapist, Jo Pitts, who works in the Community Urology Clinic here at the Medical Centre.

Podiatry

We have a team of state registered podiatrists and foot care assistants who treat and advise on many foot conditions and problems.

Initial assessments can be arranged by completing a form available at reception. Demands on the service are high and treatment is provided only for those patients who have a medical condition such as diabetes, which puts their feet at risk or an unresolved foot problem such as an in-growing toe nail. Priority is given to the elderly, the handicapped, diabetics, expectant mothers and school children.

Dietician
